FCC Votes to Move Ahead With 5G Fund

The FCC has adopted a Second Report and Order to move forward with the long-delayed 5G Fund, a $9 million universal service program meant to expand advanced wireless services to rural areas. The Commission originally drafted rules for a 5G Fund reverse auction in 2020. However, it delayed implementation as it improved the accuracy of supporting data in the National Broadband Map. Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said that there is no longer reason to delay the program further.

Commission Hopes 60-day Unlocking Makes Mobile Service More Affordable

Under an NPRM adopted today, the FCC would require mobile phone service providers to “unlock” devices 60 days after activation. Consumers would be able to activate their phones on competing networks offering better prices or coverage, thus increasing competition in the wireless industry. One issue in the proposal is over the effect a 60-day rule would have on small cellular providers or mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). NRTC Mobile Solutions offers members MVNO services and access to phones on the secondary market.
